Scripture

John 13:3-5

"Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him."

The Story

John includes a detail that changes everything. Before he describes what Jesus did, he tells us what Jesus knew. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power. He knew where he had come from and where he was going. He knew the full weight of his own authority and identity.

And so he picked up a towel.

This is not the humility of a man who doesn't know his own worth. It is the humility of a man who knows it completely — and is therefore entirely free to set it aside. The person who is most secure in who they are has no need to protect their position, defend their status, or avoid the lowest task in the room. Jesus washed feet not despite knowing who he was. Because of it.

The Way Before You

The night Jesus washed feet was the night before the cross. He knew what was coming. He knew one of the twelve would betray him. He washed his feet anyway.

There is a version of leadership and formation that holds back service until conditions are right — until the relationship is secure, until the person has earned it, until the moment feels appropriate. Jesus did not operate that way. He served from a position of complete security, complete clarity, and complete love — and he asks those who follow him to do the same.

The question for today is simple: where in your life are you withholding service because you are waiting for something? Waiting to be appreciated, waiting for the other person to move first, waiting until the situation feels more deserving? The towel does not wait for conditions. It is picked up in full knowledge of the cost — and set down only when the work is done.

Reflection

Is there someone in your life you have been unwilling to serve — and what would it look like to pick up the towel for them today, regardless of whether they deserve it?

Prayer

Lord, I want the kind of security that doesn't need to protect itself. The kind that can pick up a towel in a room full of people who don't fully understand what is happening and serve without needing to be recognized for it. Tonight, on the night you gave everything, remind me that the towel is not beneath me. It is the mark of the person you are forming me to be. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Walking in The Way — Today's Step ⭐

Today I will: Find one person I can serve today in a way that costs me something — without announcing it, without expecting anything in return.

I will watch for: The moment I feel the instinct to protect my position or status — and let that be the signal to pick up the towel instead.
