This was not an ordinary week.
The Christian calendar moved from Palm Sunday to the cross to the silence of the tomb. The cultural moment moved from the largest protest in American history to the conviction of a grandmother for quoting Scripture in a Western courtroom. A 24-year-old basketball player lost his livelihood for citing Romans 1 on Instagram. A German pastor's decision to get on a ship in 1939 became the formation text for what it looks like to stay when leaving would be easier.
None of it was coincidental. It was the week the cost of following Jesus stopped being theoretical.
Tomorrow is Easter. But today is still Saturday. And Saturday has its own instruction: stay close. Don't walk away before the story is finished.
Holy Week opened with the crowd. Palm Sunday's question is the one the whole week turns on: what kind of follower are you, actually? The people who cheered Jesus into Jerusalem were sincere. They were also wrong about what they were cheering for. By Friday most of them were gone. The ones who stayed were the ones who had already decided that the truth was worth more than their safety.
Monday named the difference between reaction and authority. Jesus did not overturn the tables in a moment of impulse. He looked, left, came back the next morning, and acted with complete intention. The formed person does not confuse strong feeling with clear action.
Tuesday confronted the most dangerous spiritual position: not ignorance, but knowing the answer and declining to follow it because of the cost. The religious leaders asked the right question. They managed the answer. That is the failure the week keeps naming in different forms.
Wednesday broke open the container. Mary poured out the most valuable thing she owned at the feet of the person she loved most. The room called it waste. Jesus called it worship. The week asked: what have you been giving in measured portions?
Thursday was Maundy Thursday — the towel, the basin, the feet of the men who would abandon him. Jesus knew everything that was coming. He served anyway. The security that does not need to protect itself is the only security free enough to take the lowest place in the room. Bonhoeffer got on a ship back to Germany for the same reason.
Friday brought the verdict. In Finland, a grandmother was convicted under a war crimes statute for writing a church pamphlet citing Romans 1. In Chicago, a 24-year-old was released from his NBA contract the afternoon he said what the pamphlet said. In Jerusalem, two thousand years ago, a man was crucified for who he was and what he claimed. The mechanism changes. The pattern does not.
Saturday is the silence. The stone in place. The women who did not leave. Most of the life of faith is lived here — in the long ordinary space between the loss and the restoration, where the promise has not yet arrived and the only instruction is to stay.
The week named the cost. It also named the commission.
Räsänen said after her conviction: "I stand by the teachings of my Christian faith and will continue to defend my and every person's right to share their convictions in the public square." Bonhoeffer wrote: "I will have no right to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people." Jesus said: tetelestai. It is finished. He chose the moment. To the end, it was a decision.
The Guardian who has sat with this week knows what it costs. The question for Sunday morning is whether that knowledge produces anything — whether the resurrection changes how you carry yourself into the week ahead, or whether you receive it and go back to managing your life at a comfortable distance from the cross.

Easter Sunday is tomorrow. The resurrection is not a metaphor and it is not a comfort — it is the hinge on which everything turns. If Jesus stayed dead, none of what this week cost means anything. If he rose, then everything the week named — the cost of conviction, the price of presence, the refusal to walk away before the story is finished — is validated from the other side of the grave.
Go into Easter Sunday as someone who has sat with the cross this week. Not as a tradition or a religious observance, but as a person who has looked at what it actually cost and decided it was worth it.
Then carry that into Monday. Into the room that doesn't know what you carry. Into the conversation that will test whether you stay or disappear. Into the week that will ask you, in ordinary and unglamorous ways, what kind of follower you actually are.
The women stayed at the tomb. Sunday came to them.
Stay. Sunday is coming.
