The Way
Sunday, April 12, 2026 | You Already Are
Matthew 5:13-14, 16
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Jesus did not say: become salt. Become light. He said: you are.
This is the Sermon on the Mount, delivered to a crowd of ordinary people — fishermen, farmers, tax collectors, the poor, the grieving, the hungry. Not a gathering of the spiritually elite. People who had been following Jesus long enough to show up on a hillside. And Jesus looked at them and said: you are already what the world needs. The question is whether you will function as it.
Salt is not useful in the container. It does its work when it contacts what it is meant to preserve and season. Light is not useful hidden under a bowl. It does its work when it illuminates the room it is placed in. The identity is not the obstacle. The deployment is.
The workplace. The neighborhood. The family table. The conversation that needs something you carry but haven't offered yet. The person who is in the dark and would move toward light if they could see it. These are not problems to solve. They are the rooms you are salt and light for.
You are not waiting to become equipped. You are not waiting for a better version of yourself to show up. The identity is settled. The question now is whether you will step out of the container and into the room.
That is the week ahead. Not the week you will have when you are more ready. This one. The rooms right in front of you. The people already there. Step out of the container.
What is the room you are walking into this week that needs salt and light — and what is keeping you in the container rather than in it?
Lord, you said I already am what the world needs. Not that I might become it — that I am it, now, in the actual circumstances I am in. Help me believe that today. Help me stop waiting for a better version of myself and start walking into the rooms that are already in front of me. Let the light out. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Today I will: Name the specific room I am walking into this week that needs what I carry — and decide before the week begins that I will not keep it in the container.
I will watch for: The moment I tell myself I am not ready, not equipped, not the right person — and let that be the signal to remember: Jesus said you already are.
