Scripture

Matthew 28:18-20

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

The Story

Jesus did not give the Commission to a room full of people who had everything figured out.

He gave it to people who had doubted him, denied him, abandoned him, and hidden behind a locked door. People who, even at the moment of the Commission, Matthew tells us, "some doubted." The risen Christ looked at that room and said: all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go.

The Commission does not wait for the doubts to be resolved. It does not require a certain level of formation before it applies. It requires obedience from people who are still in process — which is every person who has ever followed Jesus.

And it begins with the most important sentence in the passage: all authority has been given to me. The go flows from that. The Commission is not grounded in the courage of the sent person. It is grounded in the authority of the one who sends.

The Way Before You

The week began with an identity: you are salt and light, you already are. It moved through posture, preparation, movement, replenishment, and battle. It ends here — at the Commission that gives all of it its reason.

You were not formed to remain in formation. Formation is preparation for deployment. The rooms you have been carrying your faith into this week are not interruptions to your spiritual life. They are your spiritual life in action. The colleague, the neighbor, the family member, the room that pushed back — all of it is the Commission taking shape in the actual geography of your life.

Jesus closes the Commission with the promise that anchors everything: I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Not until it gets hard. Not until the room stops welcoming you. Always. To the very end.

You were made to be sent. You have been sent. Go.

Reflection

Where in the geography of your life is the Commission most clearly in front of you — and what would it look like to go there this week with the full confidence that all authority belongs to the one who sent you?

Prayer

Lord, you gave the Commission to people who doubted, denied, and ran — and you gave it anyway. You knew who you were sending. You know who you are sending now. I am not ready in the way I imagine readiness. But you have all authority, and you have sent me, and you are with me always. That is enough. I will go. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Walking in The Way — Today's Step ⭐

Today I will: Name the specific room the Commission is pointing me toward next week — and decide before Sunday that I will go into it with the full confidence of the one who sent me.

I will watch for: The moment I tell myself I need to be more ready — and let that be the signal to remember: he gave the Commission to people who doubted, and he gives it to me.
