The Crucible
Issue 31 | Saturday, May 2, 2026 | The Commission
The Commission issue does not introduce a concept. It closes the loop.
This week built a single formation reality: you have been given authority. Not permission. Not approval. Authority — given by the risen Christ, sourced in his blood, exercised through the word of your testimony, sustained by power, love, and a sound mind.
The culture this week made the stakes visible. A federal task force documented the systematic use of government power against Christian conviction. The Supreme Court agreed to hear a case about whether the state can exclude faith from public life. The SPLC — the organization that spent decades deciding which Christians were legitimate — was indicted for fraud. And for the first time in 25 years, the church that held its mission under pressure is growing.
The authority is given. The terrain is documented. The week is over.
Now what?
The authority given this week was never about favorable conditions. The seventy-two went into towns that didn't know them. The early church prayed for boldness in the middle of threats, not after they stopped. Luther stood in the most dangerous room of his life and refused to recant — not because he was fearless, but because his conscience was captive to something he could not unsay. And a federal task force just spent 196 pages documenting what formed believers already knew: the institutional pressure to be silent is real, systematic, and documented at the highest level. None of that changes what is behind you. The gates are still defensive. The power is still incomparable. The spirit of fear is still not from God. The testimony still overcomes. You have been fully equipped. The only remaining question is the one that has been true all week: will you go?
The Commission is never general. It lands on specific people in specific rooms.
1. Where are you exercising the authority you have been given? Not where you intend to. Where you are. The seventy-two went into towns. Luther stood in Worms. The early church opened their mouths in Jerusalem. The authority given this week is exercised in the rooms you are already in — the workplace where the task force report describes exactly the pressure you have been feeling, the school board where the Colorado case is playing out at the local level, the neighborhood where the church attendance data represents real people who are hungry and haven't found the room yet.
2. What testimony have you been protecting? There is a word you have been holding back. A conversation you have been managing rather than having. A room you have been circling rather than entering. The blood of the Lamb gives your testimony authority. The only variable is whether you speak it.
3. Which spirit are you operating from? Fear produces shrinking — the managed room, the softened word, the withheld testimony. It tells you that you need more before you can go. God did not give you that spirit. He gave you power, love, and a sound mind. Name the fear for what it is. Return to what was actually given. Then go.
The week has equipped you. The formation is real. The authority behind you is the blood of the Lamb. The terrain in front of you is documented and understood. The posture is submitted. The prayer has been prayed. The instrument is the word of your testimony.
Luther's last written words: We are all beggars. That is true.
He was right. The authority is not yours. It was given. You carry it as a steward, not an owner. And a steward who has been given authority is accountable for using it.
Here I stand. Now go.
The SPLC spent decades labeling Christian organizations as hate groups. Federal agencies, corporations, and platforms followed its lead. Last Tuesday it was indicted for fraud. The authority it wielded was borrowed — and it always was.
The press has been running the church-decline story for two decades. Last week, the Hartford Institute for Religion Research released data that complicates it significantly. The researchers were so surprised they went back and checked twice.
On April 30, a 17-agency federal task force released a 196-page report documenting systematic anti-Christian bias across the Biden Administration. The evidence is primary source. The pattern is documented. A person of conviction should read it.
You have been given authority. Not permission. Authority.
The gates are defensive. The power behind you is incomparable. The posture is submitted. The prayer has been prayed. The testimony overcomes.
God has not given you a spirit of fear. He gave you power, love, and a sound mind.
Here I stand. Now go.
